SAVE THE WOMEN’S LIBRARY.
London Metropolitan University want to close The Women’s Library. The library has issued a brief statement about what is happening on their website.
“On Wednesday 14 March, London Metropolitan University’s Board of Governors announced that they will be seeking a new home, custodian or sponsor for The Women’s Library.
If a new home is not found by the end of December 2012, the Library will move to opening hours of one day per week for a period of three years, with a further review at the end of that period. The Women’s Library and its supporters are campaigning to ensure the best possible outcome is found.
The main aims of the Save the Women’s Library Campaign are to:
- Raise awareness of this world-class resource
- Ensure The Women’s Library remains accessible and available to all, for generations to come
- Support London Metropolitan University’s efforts to seek a new custodian to ensure the best possible outcome for The Women’s Library and its users
The campaign is already receiving huge support nationally, but this is just the beginning. To join in and demonstrate your support, follow The Women’s Library using the social media links at the bottom of this page. Thank you to everyone who has backed the campaign so far. ”
There are several articles about the importance of the collection (here and here) and you can sign the petition HERE. It would be absolutely devastating if this collection of women’s history ended up being reduced to opening just one day a week.

And, this month at The Women’s Library n.paradoxa’s editor, Katy Deepwell will be giving a talk at an all day event entitled ‘Understanding Feminist Art in an International Frame’. Tickets are only £3 and it looks amazing.
The Women’s Library needs as much help as possible at the moment, so fingers crossed I can get the day off work.
